Beware Phone Scams!

Tech Fogey’s webmaster, Andris, had a telephone call yesterday from some naughty scam-type people.  First they cold-called and asked if he was Mr So-and-So. He said, ‘no’ and hung up.  They called again and told him his computer was infected with a Trojan virus and they wanted to help him get rid of it.  The scammers didn’t know that Andris knows what he’s doing online better than most.  So he decided to have a bit of fun with them and was researching online as they talked.  The scammer told Andris that his computer was infected with a file called csrss.exe and if he didn’t believe him, he could look it up on Google.  Sure enough, a Google search confirmed that file csrss.exe is a virus.

But while the scammers prattled on and cited any number of websites and pages to back up their assertions, Andris also found thiswhich is an official warning from Microsoft about computer-related phone scams.  Because all these shysters are trying to do is sell you bogus repair software that almost certainly will infect your computer with a virus.

You have been warned!
